|
Starscream became conscious of voices and the intense pounding sensation in his head that resembled the feeling of Rumble pounding at the ground. He tried to listen, silently and unmoving. He did not want to move as his body felt like lead. "It's a shame I am gonna miss him," Said Hook. "Ya, the base won't be the same without his sudden appearances and disappearances." Mix master replied glumly. "I won't miss the pranks so much, but he's a good warrior." Hook looked over the readings he had taken from Starscream. He cast a glance at the supine Seeker. He still lay unmoving. It had been just under two days since Thundercracker had brought him here and Hook was becoming concerned, he wondered how much brain damage the Air Commander had suffered. "I am surprised Megatron's issued that order. The worst he ever did to Starscream was exile and threaten him." "He's using him as a convenient example, that sort of behavior has to stop. We cannot fight amongst ourselves." "True." Mix master muttered as he flicked the computer off. "Well we've better get a move on, too bad Starscream will miss it, I am sure he'd love to watch Skywarp die." Hooks voice became sinister, as he shot another glance at Starscream. The door clicked and the sounds of footsteps faded. His head hurt immensely. What was he doing in here? He wondered as he brought his optics on line. He sat up but the movement caused his field of vision to go grey for a moment. He put his hand to his head and rubbed it. Last thing he remembered was meeting Skywarp, in the hall. He wanted to ask him something. What was it he wanted to ask? Starscream could not remember. Only bits and pieces came to him. Yes he had a fight with Skywarp, obviously one he had lost he thought sourly. Another wave of throbs reverberated around his head. He slowly swung his legs over the edge of the repair table and pressed both hands to his temples. He was finding it hard to think. What was it the Constructicons were saying? They were gonna miss someone. Who? Starscream snarled in his frustration, then he remembered something Hook said, "...he'd love to watch Skywarp die." He sat and pondered it for a moment. "Think, damn it." He cursed out loud. He could not understand why he was having trouble keeping his thoughts in his mind. "Anything is better than the slag work you've got me doing now!" How did this apply? He wondered. Yes, he had it now, he remembered, Skywarp had said that, when he was punching him. His eyes flashed in a moment of grim revelation. Skywarp was going to face a death penalty! And that was happening now. Starscream gingerly put his feet to the ground. Yes they seemed sure enough. He could not let this happen. He stood fully upright and hurried for the door. His head reeled in protest but the pain would have to be dealt with later. He could live with the pain. Something told him he could not live without Skywarp. He forced on. Thundercracker shook his head in frustration. "Megatron you can't be serious! This is Skywarp you're talking about; he is loyal to you to the core." He had promised Skywarp he would try to sway their leader from this course of action. "Skywarp has committed a grave crime, my tolerance for these infractions are at an end," Said Megatron irritably to the Seeker. "Starscream has posed a greater risk to you. At worst you've banished him, and you have always accepted him back at his regular position." "It grieves me to do this to Skywarp. If it were Starscream, in his place, it would not bother me in the least. This nonsense cannot continue, Thundercracker, what sort of disorderly mess are the Decepticons becoming if we fight internally? The Autobots would pick out our weakness. This I cannot allow. Our weakness must be eliminated." He looked over at the Conehead Seekers. "Thrust, Ramjet, prepare Skywarp. Go now. Dirge, Soundwave follow me." "Megatron Please! Spare Skywarp. He feels guilty about it. Give him a black mark on his record!" Thundercracker pleaded. "When Starscream awakens we are going to have trouble on our hands, Thundercracker. I am sorry but this is my final decision. I did not make it lightly." Megatron strode to the door. Thundercracker overtook him and blocked the way. "Please, this is too high a price for the crime involved. Starscream still lives." "If you don't get out of my way, Thundercracker, I will see no choice in the matter other than to have you confined to the brig for the duration of the execution. All Decepticons are to attend; Starscream is the only exception because of his condition that was induced by Skywarp." Megatron's optics flared red and his voice beat with anger. Thundercracker stepped aside. He did not want to leave Skywarp alone for this. Nothing he could do was going to sway his leaders mind one way or another in this matter. He stood silently as Megatron walked down to the assembly area. He clenched his hands in frustration. There was nothing he could do. Skywarp was lead into a large open room, by Thrust and Ramjet. Hands bound firmly behind his back. The rest of the Decepticon army was lined along three of the plain grey gunmetal coloured walls. Everyone was there with exception to Starscream, who was still in repair bay. Megatron and Soundwave stood side by side. No one made any sound; the tension in the room was thick enough to cut, all optics were on him while he was gently led into the middle. He could not believe that Megatron had issued an execution order; The Air commander lived and was re-covering, so he had not killed him. So why should he get executed for attacking Starscream, who, still functioned, when Starscream often turned on Megatron? This is just not fair. What made it worse was this was his first major infraction in a heck of a long time; he should at least be given a warning or a tick on his permanent record. He wondered angrily if Starscream had managed to talk Megatron into this. He regretted not cleaving Starscream's metal skull in half and killing him. At least, then, it would have been worth it. Thrust and Ramjet stood him in the center of the room; they turned away from him without a word and joined Dirge. Thundercracker walked up to Skywarp and placed a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry 'Warp, I tried to talk Megatron out of it. I mean, who here has not wanted to beat the living slag out of Screamer." He spoke softly and his face was lined with sadness. He and Skywarp had shared a special friendship for many eons; he was unsure how to reassure someone who was going to be dead in less than five minutes. He could see fear living in Skywarp's optics. "They want you to kneel." He said gently helping Skywarp down off his feet. "It's not fair. It's not fraggin fair." "I know it's not fair. You were—are, a good friend, Skywarp. Hail Cybertron," Said Thundercracker as he snapped to attention and balled his fist in the Decepticon salute. "Dirge," said Megatron. "Will you please come here?" "I'm sorry, I have to go." Thundercracker sounded choked as stepped away from his condemned friend feeling horrible. He did not want to witness this, but he could not let his friend die "alone". He was angry, with Skywarp for his thoughtless action and what it was about to cost him: his friend. He knew life at the headquarters was going to be very dismal without him. He walked over and stood beside Thrust and Ramjet. He really did not want to see this. He was infuriated with Megatron, why would he do this to Skywarp? He was loyal and devoted to the cause; he was also, a loyal friend. Thundercracker's fingers rubbed a small metal box that he had kept Skywarp's powerchip rectifier in. He had attempted to give it back to him earlier urging him to escape when he had found out word of Megatron's intention, but he remained loyal insisting that it was only a threat nothing more. "You could have saved yourself, Skywarp, saved us." he thought. He knew that when the trigger was pulled half of himself would die along with his friend. The dark blue and grey Conehead walked solemnly over to Megatron. The Decepticon leader transformed and Dirge plucked him out of the air. Soundwave stepped forward. "Do you have any last words, Skywarp?" Asked Soundwave. Skywarp remained silent. He had nothing to say, even if he had something to utter at this moment he would not be able to, he was almost too frightened to remain kneeling. "Skywarp, for your willful admission of a crime against a member of your faction, namely the attempted murder of your superior officer and commander, Starscream, you are sentenced, on this day, to be terminated with one shot. May Primus be with you." Soundwave's voice showed no emotional inflection. There was a long pause "On the Count of Three, Dirge, you may fire only one shot." "ONE." Dirge lifted the Megatron gun out at arms length. Skywarp's field of vision fuzzed out until everything else around him was grey. Random thoughts and memories flitted across his mind. He still thought it was only a threat; Dirge would not pull on three. Dirge would. He loves to kill. "TWO." Dirge sighted along the barrel and aimed at Skywarp's chest in the area that the lasercore housing should be. A hit there and death should come fairly quick and painless. Skywarp started to quake. He knew time was almost up. His thoughts suddenly became latched onto Thundercracker. What of Thundercracker? What would happen to Thundercracker? "THREE." Starscream came bursting through the doors, "Dirge, Megatron, NO! Don't! This is insane!" He stumbled as he leaped at Dirge; the grim Seeker fired. "SKYWARP!" Cried Thundercracker. Starscream opened his arms and fell against Dirge knocking him over. Megatron flew out of his hand in a glinting spiral to the floor where he transformed and watched grimly. Starscream landed with his arms around Dirge's legs and he looked over at Skywarp who lay sprawled on the floor. "Warp... no!" He whispered. He knew he was too late. The room became noisy as Thundercracker tore away from Ramjet and Thrust to run to Skywarp's side. Starscream's vision suddenly went red as very sharp pain from his head threatened to render him unconscious. "Starscream, get off me or I will shoot you." Said Dirge as Starscream came out of his momentary shock. The Air Commander stood up cringing under the throb of his protesting headache. He ran to Skywarp and helped Thundercracker turn him over. There was no wound. Starscream inhaled sharply and he looked at Thundercracker who looked equally confused. "That shot should have torn him in half," Whispered Starscream wincing painfully. Thundercracker placed a hand on Skywarp's chest, his face lined with grief. Starscream looked equally distraught. Dirge quickly walked over being joined by Thrust and Ramjet. "I don't understand; I did not aim too high." Skywarp suddenly moved as his optics flickered on. Starscream jerked in surprise. "Primus be praised, you're alive!" said Thundercracker as relief replaced the visage of grief. As Skywarp's optics focused he saw Starscream's half scowling face. "What the frag…HOLY PRIMUS, I'm dead and stuck in hell with Screamer?!?" Starscream attempted to maintain an indifferent face but a smile tugged at the edges of his mouth. He was glad to see Skywarp alive. Although he was puzzled as to what this was all about. Starscream winced again from a particularly sharp stab of pain. He placed a hand to the side of his head in an attempt to stop the drilling ache. "It's ok, 'Warp, it's ok. You're ok." Starscream whispered as he started to loosen the bindings from Skywarp's wrists. "It's ok 'Warp we are here." Thundercracker and Starscream held Skywarp so he was propped between them. They could feel his body still shaking. Skywarp realized he was not dead as the other Decepticons laughed anxiously. "Are you ok Starscream?" Asked Thundercracker for a moment concerned by the sudden sick look on the Air Commander's countenance. "I'd be more worried about Skywarp than my head right now, Thundercracker." Murmured Starscream. "He just went through a living hell." Starscream felt like he was going through the same hell as his vision hazed red again. He felt real ill. The other Seekers near by muttered in agreement. Their comrade just went through a very unpleasant experience. One that he and they would never forget. "Megatron, what is the meaning of this?" Asked Starscream attempting to keep his voice level, clear and loud enough to be heard over the rest of the Decepticons. Megatron only stepped forward into the crowd around Skywarp. The Decepticons stepped out of his way leaving him a clear path to the three Seekers huddled in the middle. "Let that serve as a warning to you all," Silence fell over the room as Megatron cautioned his soldiers. "I will no longer tolerate such insolence. Do you realize what would happen to the Decepticon forces if we were to lose an Air Commander and a warrior in one day?" The Decepticons looked at each other in puzzlement. "No one is irreplaceable," Megatron continued. "However, it would hamper our plans. You all must learn to work together for the greater cause of the Decepticons. I don't care if you all hate each other. To be quite honest, there are many of you that I am not too fond of," Megatron was less than subtle as he glanced at Starscream. "If anything like this ever happens again, Primus save you for I will replace you," Megatron clenched his fist as he threatened his troops. Skywarp attempted to stand but his legs gave way underneath his weight. Starscream and Thundercracker tried to help him but he pushed them both aside and fell forward catching himself and landing on all fours. He crawled to Megatron and knelt at his feet. "Megatron, my leader, please forgive me. I was wrong to attack Starscream. There is no excuse for my behavior. Please, sir." Megatron grinned as Skywarp pleaded. "You should take notes Starscream. If you're going to beg for mercy, at least confess your sins first." Megatron roughly grabbed Skywarp's arm and pulled him to his feet. "Skywarp, you are one of my most trusted and loyal servants. This incident is forgiven but not forgotten, do you understand?" "Yes, sir," Skywarp replied standing at attention. "Very well, you are all dismissed. Now get back to work!" Megatron bellowed as the Decepticons scrambled to return to their normal duties. Megatron departed leaving the three Seekers alone. Skywarp glowered at Starscream and started to leave but was stopped by the red and white Seeker. "I can't imagine what you just went through," Starscream said sympathetically. The fear on Skywarp's pale face had been replaced completely with anger. His eyes blazed brightly. "No, you can't," Said Skywarp angrily. "I can understand that you'd be angry with Megatron…" "It's not Megatron I'm angry with," Skywarp interrupted. "This was all your fault." Skywarp wagged his finger in Starscream's face. He wanted to attack him again for the humiliation the event had caused, but Megatron's threat rang in his mind. Starscream stepped back head throbbing with pain. "My fault? How is this?" He was confused and hurt by the accusation. Skywarp shook his head. "I don't know, it just is. Leave me alone!" Skywarp began to walk away. "No Skywarp, please! I've been… I don't know, in coma for a few days, I just woke up. How can it be my fault? You—you struck me first!" He could not remember if this was entirely true but he was pretty certain it was. His head rocked painfully and he had trouble focusing on the dark Seeker. Skywarp stopped at the doorway and looked at Starscream over his shoulder. "If you respected me more this would have never happened." Starscream looked to Thundercracker for help; he knew how to handle Skywarp. Thundercracker shook his head. "Only you can resolve this, it's between you two now." Thundercracker decided it was best to stay out of it this time. The war between Skywarp and Starscream had to end and only they could sort it out; he hoped. "I have nothing more to say to you Screamer, other than I'm really disappointed." He tried to cover the pain in his voice with anger and resentment. He feared it did not work as Starscream's face suddenly softened. "Respect is something that is not always automatically given Warp, it's earned. You earned it." Starscream knew that this also applied to how the others viewed him. Skywarp stopped for a moment and pondered Starscream's words. "You have a funny way of showing it," He said bitterly as he left the room. Starscream looked at Skywarp with confusion and frustration; it was becoming more difficult to think. "What have I done Warp, how have I wronged you?" Starscream half ran following. Skywarp walked faster to avoid him. "You want a rematch or something?" Skywarp said in frustration as he quickened his pace. "I don't know. I feel..... ah—ugh" Starscream leaned heavily against the wall as his head painfully caused him to partially collapse. The pressure inside of his head was intensifying. He knew he was going to have to cease his pursuit of Skywarp and return to repair bay. Skywarp rolled his optics as he thought Starscream was putting on a show. He stood with his arms folded and waited for the Seeker's next performance. Thundercracker entered the hall and moved hesitantly towards Starscream. "Please Warp. I don't understand." Starscream said painfully as he allowed himself to slip the rest of the way to the floor. He no longer felt able to stand on his own. "Of course you don't understand you've got your head so far up your afterburner you can't see the real world." Skywarp enjoyed his new perspective of Starscream. He stood proudly over the sprawled Seeker as he spat his words. He wanted to kick him, but decided it best to walk away instead. Starscream sat with his mouth agape. He was not sure what he could say. Nothing he had said had affected Skywarp. He could understand the Seekers anger. He could not understand why the blame was still on his shoulders. He drew a knee up to his chest. "Skywarp, Starscream's been unconscious for two days," Thundercracker intervened. He stood by Starscream, looking at his angry friend. He was very worried about the Air commander's present condition. Skywarp quickly turned to face Thundercracker. He couldn't believe his best friend was taking the traitor's side. "Has he also been unconscious for the past twenty years?" Skywarp asked acidly. "I don't think you saw it, but he came to your rescue." Thundercracker leaned down to help Starscream to his feet. Thundercracker grabbed the Seeker's forearm and slowly pulled him up. He braced against the wall Starscream as he became unsteady on his feet. Skywarp was becoming more frustrated. "What do you care if I live or die? I kicked your afterburner and you tried to save mine?" He felt as though he had been the one to receive a head injury. He couldn't understand how Starscream could feel the way he claimed he did. The animosity between the two had started when Starscream was named Air Commander. Skywarp said nothing but felt slighted by the event. He had put in for the position and should have received it based on his service record alone. Megatron offered no reason for Skywarp not getting the job and he never asked. "You are too valuable a warrior. You have assets that cannot be replaced." Starscream tried to reason. His thoughts were starting to fall apart. "Not according to Megatron. We can all be replaced." There was pain and frustration in Skywarp's voice. Starscream shook his head and regretted doing so. "Megatron does not see the whole picture." "And you do?" Skywarp says sharply. "How do I say this, it's hard for me to think clearly enough. I know I got into a fight with you but I don't remember much." "How convenient," Skywarp retorted. Starscream turned and punched the wall in frustration. Again his vision went red and very blurry. How was he ever going to get through Skywarp's thick head? Skywarp was surprised he didn't get punched. "Skywarp you can teleport, that's a massive advantage to us," Starscream said through clenched teeth. "I don't hate you. If you think I hate you I don't. Your jokes get very annoying but as an individual I do not hate you." "Whatever. I'd better return to the control room before Megatron gets too pissed. Coming TC?" "Perhaps I deserved to get my afterburner kicked. I still don't hate you for it." Starscream added. "Angry yes. Furious yes…" "No 'Warp. I think I am gonna assist Starscream to the repair bay, I don't think he should even be out of that place." Thundercracker interrupted Starscream as he took his arm and pulled him toward the repair bay doors. Starscream stumbled. Skywarp looked at Thundercracker as he began to walk toward the control room. Starscream felt a massive swell of frustration. He was annoyed at having to be helped; he was annoyed with Skywarp being so obstinate. "Skywarp comeback here just for a moment," Thundercracker said in a commanding voice that he rarely used toward Skywarp. Skywarp stopped and turned to Thundercracker. "I think what Screamer is trying to say is he does not hate you, I think he actually forgives you." He looked at Starscream who nodded a weak affirmative. "Well maybe I don't forgive him," Skywarp said acidly glowering at Starscream who was leaning against the wall again holding his head, face contorted with pain. Thundercracker shook his head with frustration and continued. "You think he set this up." "I don't know. All I know is I have work to do." Skywarp felt as though the other two Seekers were ganging up on him. He found it harder to think and wanted to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. "Skywarp, he's been out cold for two days. He could not have arranged this." Starscream started to slip again and Thundercracker pushed him against the wall. Thundercracker shot Starscream a quick glance and saw that his optics were glowing dimly, a very unhealthy sign. "You're lucky I don't have my powerchip rectifier or I would have teleported out of this conversation a long time ago." Skywarp often used jokes to hide pain. This time he was using anger to cover it. Starscream whimpered painfully and pressed his azure palm to his head. "Could you help me get him back to the repair bay?" Thundercracker pleaded. "Then you can go do your work." Skywarp exhaled sharply. He could not resist when Thundercracker asked for help even if it was to help Starscream. "Fine." Thundercracker slipped Starscream's right arm over his shoulder. Skywarp reluctantly took his left arm as Starscream mumbled a weak "thanks". Hook was in the repair bay going over Starscream's vitals that he had recorded just before he ran to Skywarp's aid. He was surprised to find the Seeker was able to sit up let alone knock Dirge off of his feet. "There you are Starscream. You shouldn't be out walking around." He watched as Thundercracker and Skywarp hauled the semi-conscious Seeker in between them. "You should have told me. I could have spoken to Megatron," Starscream said weakly to the Constructicon as Skywarp and Thundercracker helped him onto the table. The blue Seeker eased Starscream gently down while the black one dropped him. Thundercracker shot Skywarp an angry glare. "Told you what?" Hook inquired as he gathered up his diagnostics equipment. "About what they were doing to Skywarp..." The Seeker uttered a pained gasp. "Can I go now? I have work to do." Skywarp started for the door. "Don't go Warp please," Starscream pleaded weakly. "Why, do you need someone to hold your hand?" Skywarp scoffed. Thundercracker seems to be doing that just fine. By the way, can I have my fraggin chip back?" "Skywarp, I don't think you realize the seriousness of this." Thundercracker looked at the little metal box in his hand. "No, you can't have it right now." "What the frag?! I'm sick of these games! Frag all of you!" Skywarp turned to leave. Hook leaned in with a scanner. "Ah yes I see, the energon conduit has ruptured again. I will have to get inside to repair the damage. Pressure inside his head has built up to dangerous levels. Must have been with him jumping into Dirge that did it. Rest; that is what one needs after a concussion, but we can't let him sleep he might return to a coma. Thundercracker and Skywarp, I might need your help with this." "What? You mean I really messed him up?" Hook was not known for pranks. Skywarp only just realized the seriousness of Starscream's injuries. "He had several badly jostled circuits and a few shattered internal braces." Hook added. Skywarp frowned at Starscream. "I had no idea." He said almost apologetically. "It surprised me to see him bursting that door down." Hook continued as he collected more tools. "Geez, I get it. I'm really sorry ok?" Skywarp said angrily. Starscream looked at Skywarp for a moment before he spoke. "I did not want you dead. I overheard him talking," Starscream pointed to Hook. "It's all one big misunderstanding." He said the last word laboriously from another onslaught pain. "I'm not as stupid as everyone thinks I am. I know what happened today, you don't have to explain it to me." Skywarp was hurt at what he supposed were accusations regarding his intelligence. He was aware that he was not the brightest Decepticon, but he was not nearly as dim-witted as the others thought he was. Starscream looked perplexed. "I fail to understand fully what happened. Look Skywarp, when I can fly..." "If you can fly," Hook added as he laid out tools on the table beside The Seeker. Starscream glared at him and continued. "When I can fly again, we will go out and take our frustrations out on some Autobots. Just the three of us." Skywarp grumbled. "What are you saying? I'm back on your team? So all I had to do to get out of the control room was beat the living slag outta you?" He wondered if the injured Seeker would remain true to his word and silently hoped so. "Primus no, I was going to ask you to join me on a mission then." It was a half truth. But now he meant it. "Whatever. Just fix this bastard so I can get back to work," Snapped Skywarp. He doubted that Starscream was telling the truth. He knew the red Seeker wasn't looking for him to ask him on a mission. If this were true, Starscream would have paged Skywarp, not sneak around the base looking for him. "There is no fun in flying with Dirge. It's his engines, he freaks me out." Starscream continued his attempt to win Skywarp over. "Yeah, he has that effect," Skywarp snickered. "Ramjet is obsessed with crashing into things and Thrust is weird." Starscream wrinkled his nose as he spoke. "The whole lot is loony." The trio of Seekers chuckled as they reflected on the Coneheads. "So why do you go with them? We've been wingmates for years. It hurts you know." Skywarp tried to keep the pain out of his voice to no avail. "I had to remind myself why I liked your company." Starscream chuckled weakly. "Nothing hurts more than thinking I was going to loose an irreplaceable wingmate." Save perhaps his head right now, he thought. "I shouldn't have kicked your afterburner. I should have turned you and that little datapad of yours in instead." Skywarp wagged his finger as he whispered his threat to Starscream. Starscream motioned for Skywarp to lean in closer who did so reluctantly. "You might understand this Warp. You should catch my meaning." The Air Commander paused for a moment a he put together his thoughts. "Someday, somehow I'm gonna make it all right, but not right now. I know you're wondering when. You're the only one who knows that." Starscream's voice was soft for a moment. Skywarp's optics brightened with fear. Starscream was reciting the words of a Nickelback song. The song not only explained Starscream's feelings toward the situation, it was also the only thing his battered brain could think of. "How did you find out about that?" Skywarp asked fearfully as Thundercracker stood perplexed. "What the frag are you two talking about? Is that some kind of code?" Thundercracker shook his head. He really did not understand the relationship these two Seekers had. "In essence, it is like code." Starscream grinned slyly at Skywarp. "You've been spying on me!" Skywarp charged. "No, Skywarp, you sometimes hum when you are flying." Starscream chuckled but then began to groan as his head pounded. Skywarp looked at Thundercracker with fear that he would be found out but Thundercracker smiled wryly at him. "I don't know what you're afraid of Skywarp. We each seem to like something about those flightless worms." Thundercracker still had no clue as to what the two Seekers were on about, but he was sure it had something to do with humans. He smiled and played along. "I don't know what you're all babbling about. We have work to do." Hook interjected as he prepared his tools. Starscream glanced at Hook fearfully for a moment. "Skywarp, one day I will explain to you why I have what I have on that pad." Starscream placed his hand on the dark Seeker's arm. "That's enough out of you. You need serious repairs." Hook said as he began his work. | |
